Discover Noh in Kyoto specializes in curating events centered on noh and kyogen theatre. Our mission is to elevate noh and kyogen’s global recognition through multicultural and multilingual engagement, contributing to its enduring legacy. A portion of our proceeds is allocated to foster educational initiatives for students and young audiences, supporting the art form’s transmission to future generations.

Our activities include:

• Noh and Kyogen performance events and educational workshops.
• Tourism initiatives focused on Noh and Kyogen cultural experiences.
• Professional interpretation and translation for Noh and Kyogen.
• Specialized training courses for intercultural facilitators and bilingual tour guides specializing in Noh and Kyogen.

What is noh?

Noh is a classical Japanese performing art that combines poetry, chant, dance, music, costumes, and masks. Originating in the 14th century, it has evolved over time into a highly refined and stylized form. While firmly rooted in Japanese tradition, its bold expression and elegant simplicity have universal appeal. The repertory is diverse, featuring stories of deities, vengeful spirits, noble women, nature spirits, and supernatural beings. Some plays are short and dramatic, while others focus on poetic language and graceful movement.

Noh and Kyoto – a timeless heritage

Kyoto, the ancient capital, is rich with legends and stories that are celebrated in classical literature, making its landmarks fitting backgrounds for noh plays. Today, Kyoto is home to numerous noh theatres, actors, musicians, costume makers, and mask carvers, establishing it as the perfect place to experience noh as a vibrant, living tradition.

Julia Yamane（山根 樹）Representative Director: English-Japanese interpreter/translator. Kyoto City Certified Guide. Practitioner of Kanze School noh dance and chant since 1999.

Diego Pellecchia（ディエゴ ペレッキア）Director: Associate Professor, Kyoto Sangyo University. Noh scholar, Practitioner of Kongo School noh dance and chant since 2007 and certified instructor since 2020.

一般社団法人Discover Noh in Kyotoは、日本の伝統芸能である能に関する理解を深めて、広く発信することを目的とする団体です。

能楽を主題に、インバウンド観光客や京都在住の外国人に向けたワークショップやツアー、通訳ガイドや留学生に向けた講座など、幅広く活動をしております。

主な事業：

・能楽に関わる企画のコーディネート

・能楽の発信を目的とした観光事業

・能楽に関わる通訳・翻訳等の多言語対応 ・通訳ガイドや異文化交流の現場で働く方に向けた能楽講座

役員：

Julia Yamane（山根樹）　代表理事: 京都市認定通訳ガイド。日英翻訳者・通訳者。1999年に観世流能楽師に入門。

Diego Pellecchia（ペレッキア　ディエゴ）　理事: 京都産業大学文化学部京都文化学科准教授。能楽研究者。2007年に金剛流能楽師に入門2020年に同流の師範免許取得。
