Discover Noh in Kyoto – Next Generation

Students are invited to explore the noh play Kokaji, a story of the Inari Deity and the legendary swordsmith Munechika. Witness the rich tradition of noh, both on and off the stage, in Kyoto.

Application is open to university students and those under the age of 25.

Program Summary

Program 1: Nov 6 (Sat) 18:30- An introduction to noh with a focus on the noh play Kokaji and Kyoto by actors with an excerpt performance (admission fee: free)

Program 2: Nov 25(Thu) 19:00- Full-scale noh performance of Kokaji (admission fee: ticket fee charged – details follow)

Program 3: Nov – Dec (six session dates) Visit sites related to Kokaji with other students and interpreter-guides and work together to create short pieces of documentary films (admission fee: free)

Program 1

English interpretation available

Program 1 is an introduction to “noh and Kyoto” with a focus on the play Kokaji which features the Inari Deity and Swordsmith Munechika. You will be introduced to the world of noh Kyoto by noh actor Kawamura Haruhisa while learning about its costumes and masks, and then enjoy a short excerpt performance of Kokaji.

Discover Noh in Kyoto’s programs are normally led in English, but this time the main language will be in Japanese.

Please notify us by Nov. 1 (Mon) 5 (Fri), if you would like to join Program 1 with English interpretation.

Program 2

Program 2 is a full-scale performance of the noh play Kokaji that we introduce in Program 1. This performance is not held by Discover Noh in Kyoto, but if you apply to join Program1 or Program1&3, then we can book a ticket for you.

Program 3

In program 3, participants will be split into a few groups and make short documentary films introducing “the world of noh in Kyoto” while visiting sites related to Kokaji. You and your group’s experience with noh will be featured in the film you make.

Interpreter-guides will be leading each group, but due to the need of group discussions in the process of filming, participation in Program 3 requires conversational-level Japanese proficiency (Alternatively, you could bring a bilingual friend as your private “interpreter”).

Please note:

*Participants must wear a face mask (but not a noh mask!) during all programs in efforts to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

*The program is subject to changes due to public health concerns or extreme weather conditions.

*The main language will be Japanese. Full-service English interpretation is available only for Program 1.

*Participation in Program 2 requires payment of ticket fee.

*The films and other visual contents created in Program 3 will be released on the internet under Discover Noh in Kyoto’s credit.

*Participants are responsible for transportation fees and costs related to using your cameras/phones during Program 3.
